The Lords of Dogtown
The Lords of Dogtown is based on the real life story of the Zephyrs (Z-Boys) skateboarding team in suburban 1975 California. Through boredom, several skaters are able to creatively find places to work on their craft.
Skip Engblom (Heath Ledger) is one of the owners of a shop that will sponsor a team, and he convinces several young neighborhood boys to join. He pushes each of the young skaters to the very extreme despite his own ignorance.

Very quickly the top three skaters become international stars. The story closely follows each of the team members, exposing their hopes and inspirations as well as their faults. Along the way, the face of skateboarding is completely changed forever. Stacy (John Robinson), Tony (Victor Rasuk), and Jay ( Emile Hirsch) each deal individually with their sudden rise to fame and fortune.
The Brothers Grimm
The Brothers Grimm (USA 2005) is the story of two brothers down on their luck who creatively con village after village by convincing citizens that they are cursed and only The Brothers Grimm can rid them of that curse, for a price. Jakob Grimm (Heath Ledger) and Willhelm Grimm (Matt Damon) are eventually caught and brought to the village of Marbaden in French occupied Germany (set in the year 1811.)

The Grimm Brothers are told that ten girls have vanished in the forest and they are at task to discover what happened to them. During their mission in the enchanted forest they discover there actually is a curse which can only be exorcised by true courage, not their usual tactics.

The brothers keep a detailed journal of each of their encounters during their trials in the forest. Each entry references one of the well known Grimms Fairy Tales, weaving them together, creating this final tale of the Brothers Grimm.
Brokeback Mountain
The movie Brokeback Mountain is a love story that begins in the summer of 1963 and continues through 20 years. The story begins with the introduction of the two characters in a chance encounter. Jack (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a cowboy in the rodeo and Ennis, (Heath Ledger) a ranch hand. They are quite different from each other, but neither can help the instant attraction to each other. They form a very strong irrevocable bond while tending to sheep in the cold mountains of Wyoming. One awkward hug shared between the two characters develops the beginning of a strong, emotional, moving, and tragic love story.

There is both humor and sadness throughout the formation of the relationship in that each of the characters denies to each other any gay feelings or tendencies, while also searching for a meaningful and lasting relationship.

Throughout the story, each man tries to fit into society by marrying and even raising children but upon each encounter they are reminded of their undeniable love for each other and also the extreme taboo of a gay relationship in that time and place. They try to understand and maintain the relationship by planning annual fishing trips together but as their feelings grow, so does the anger and frustration caused by their own denial.

Each of the characters realizes that the love they feel for each other can really only be requited at that special place where it all began. In the end of the movie Ennis realizes through his daughters relationship with her fiancé that true love, in any form, should be acknowledged and never wasted or forgotten.
Blackrock
Heath Ledger has a small role in this film. He is one of group of surfer friends at the party and can be seen throwing a punch during the chaotic party scene. (One glimpse of a now super star's early years)
Blackrock is loosely based on a true story. This movie takes place in a small beach town in New South Wales. 17 year old Jared (Laurence Breuls) hosts a beach party reunion for his recently come home friend Ricko (Simon Lyndon). The party becomes out of control with drinking and fighting and Jared retreats to the beach for a walk.

Alone, Jared witnesses the brutal gang rape of a 15 year old girl who is eventually murdered by Ricko. Jared is the only witness to the truth of the crime but cannot make himself come clean. The relationships that Jared shares with his group of friends involves a silent code of loyalty which tears him apart.

Jared reacts to the ensuing investigation with angry, silent, self loathing. During this time he also learns that his own mother is dying of cancer. His friend Ricko pressures Jared into creating an alibi for him. It is pure turmoil for this teenager as he struggles with what he knows he should do and with what his friends expect him to do.
Clowning Around
Heath Ledger had his first acting role in a movie with this film, though very small.
This lighthearted story, suitable for family entertainment revolves around a fourteen year old boy living in foster homes throughout Australia. He remains persistent in his dream despite his new foster parents alternative plans for him.

Through a series of adventures from Australia to Paris, France Sim learns that clowning is a true form of art requiring much more than fun and games.

With support from a newly aquired group of friends and a veteran performer named Jack Merrick(Ernie Dingo), Sim will at last realize his lifetime dream of being a worldwide performing circus clown.
Paws
Paws is a family film created in 1997. The story begins with an older man named Alex (Norman Kaye) and his little Jack Russell Terrier named PC. Alex has hidden 1 million dollars from the evil woman known as Anja (Sandy Gore).

The clues to finding the money are all put on a disk to send to Alex’s friend Susie (Caroline Guillmer) along with his dog upon his death. Alex gives the disk to PC and the dog is sent running to find Susie and somehow let her know what has happened to him.

PC has trouble locating Susie and ends up at her new neighbor’s house where a young boy named Zac (Nathan Cavaleri) takes ownership of the dog. Zac is able to create a “growl translating speaker” which PC wears in the form of a bow-tie, which allows him to tell Zac what has happened (voice of Billy Connolly).

Heath Ledger has a minor role in this film in the character of Oberon. The dog is the hero of this story as they are eventually able to locate the million dollars in a most unlikely hiding spot.
Two Hands

Jimmy is moved up the ranks, and allowed to transport $10,000 for Pando. He carelessly lays the bag of loot in the sand and it is stolen by two young children.

Jimmy must use all of his friends and connections to try and get the money back for Pando. Most of the movie is wrapped around the chase between Pando’s bad guys trying to kill Jimmy, and Jimmy on a quest to somehow obtain the money.

10 Things I Hate About You
The movie 10 Things I Hate About You is loosely based on William Shakespeare’s The Taming of The Shrew, this version taking place at Padua High School. Heath Ledger’s character is Patrick Verona, a mysterious rebel type with a bad reputation to match.
Kat (Julia Stiles) is a depressed, negative teen who really hates guys and the whole idea of dating. Her sister Bianca (Laresa Olenyik) is the complete opposite, thriving in high school and popular enough to attract the attention of the new guy Cameron (Joseph Gordon-Levitt).

Cameron is desparate for a date with Bianca but learns that her father (Larry Miller) will not allow her to date anybody until her sister Kat does, which basically means never, given Kat’s attitude on guys and dating.
Cameron arranges to have Patrick Verona paid to “court” Kat so that he can date Bianca. The two most unlikely people in school to fall in love, eventually do, as Patrick is able to break through to discover that underneath her tough girl exterior Kat is a very likeable normal girl.

He decides that he must get himself back to Sudan and help his comrades and restore his honor.

Harry desperately tries to rekindle the love with Ethne, only to learn she has become romantically involved with his close friend Jack. Harry does everything that he can from spying, to becoming a warrior for the opposition, even spending time in an enemy prison.

Harry’s quest will be over when he can honorably return three feathers given to him by his fellow comrades and one given to him by his fiancée, which have represented his cowardice in turning his back on each of them.

When Francesca meets Casanova, she is totally turned off by him, and so Casanova must disguise himself as the Lard King of Genoa in order to spend time with her. What happens with all the costumes and disguises is very funny and entertaining, not at all what the general perception of Casanova should be.
Casanova is arrested after revealing his true self to Francesca. In the process, he keeps her from being jailed for impersonating a male author. Eventually they are both sentenced to death for their lies and deception, but are saved in the end by one final grand impersonation.

stages of his life, though his name is not mentioned in the film. Heath Ledger plays the part of Robbie, a well known actor playing the role of the songwriter. He falls for Clair (Charlotte Gainsbourg), but his decline into the habits and beliefs of his “role” destroy his marriage and his family.

The various characters comprising different Dylan stages in life are Woody, a young black child obsessed with the folk music scene, Jack (Christian Bale) the rebellious folk singer who’s music caused upheaval, Arthur (Ben Wishaw) the lyricist, poet type. Robbie (Heath Ledger) who’s actor character portrays Jack; Billy (Richard Gere) a sly wild west frontiersman, and Jude (Cate Blanchett) a drug using confrontationalist during the 1960’s.

There is actual footage and sound byte from Bob Dylan but the movie absorbs the viewer into the various stories without needing to know that it represents Bob Dylans life and views.

Dr. Parnassus owns a dark secret as well. Long ago he made a deal with the devil in order to have immortality. He later made another deal with the devil in order to keep his youth. In the later deal, his end of the bargain was to give away his first-born on her 16th birthday, to the devil (Mr. Nick).

As his daughter Valentina’s birthday approaches, Dr. Parnassus is desperate to protect her from the impending fate. When Mr. Nick arrives to collect his end of the bargain, he is willing to make a deal again. This time Valentina will be given to the one who can collect five souls first, Mr. Nick the Devil or Dr. Parnassus her father.

Dr. Parnassus enlists the help of five very distinct characters for Imaginarium (one of whom is portrayed by Heath Ledger). The one that can help Dr. Parnassus save his daughter will be allowed to marry her if he is successful over the Devil.

The Dark Knight

The Joker wants to make a deal with the mob. He offers his services as their leader in order to eliminate Batman’s attempts to eradicate the mobsters. He demands that Batman reveal himself or the streets will be filled with blood.

The Joker is able to deceive members of the police force, the mob, and even those closest to Batman in order to achieve his goals. Much of the movie makes you wonder what makes The Joker so evil and hateful, as if only death and Batman’s destruction will bring him any sense of satisfaction.
